Streets 2k7 – The Opening of the Largest Mural Gallery

Streets 2k7, a two-day community event on May 12-13, 2007 in New Brunswick, NJ will bring life back to a forgotten and underutilized waterfront on the Raritan River in central New Jersey. Musicians and visual artists will present their art along and on the two-mile long retention wall. The goal is to revitalize an underused public space and create the largest outdoor gallery of murals.

This event will be the official opening of Raritan River Art Walk - a joint project of the City of New Brunswick, the New Brunswick Arts Council and Albus Cavus. The Art Walk is a two-mile long path located on the waterfront in New Brunswick, NJ.

Streets 2k7 is a weekend-long family event, during which local residents together and artists will transform this neglected path of the city into an extraordinary outdoor gallery of public art.

This open and participatory event is a part of a larger experiment in an innovative approach to the revitalization of a neglected public space. We envision art to be the driving force in changing this abandoned bike path into a space that will become widely used by the community for social interaction and recreational purposes.

There is no boundary between artist and audience. We invite everybody to participate in this event as artists, volunteers, or audience. Visitors will be encouraged to paint or help clean up the path. The Art Walk is a great place for family fun, walks along the path for enjoying the river life and the art on the wall.

The event is coordinated with the Coexistence Exhibit, which spreads throughout the city and is also an outdoor art exhibit promoting tolerance and peace.
